PI-1HK

Before Chief Radioman Harry Kidder became the founder of the U.S. Navy’s “On-The-Roof Gang,” he was an early amateur radio enthusiast stationed in the Asiatic Fleet aboard USS POPE (DD-225). He was issued Ham callsign PI-1HK ('HK' for Harry Kidder) in the Philippines and NUQ B in the United States. Chief Kidder operated his Ham equipment on board USS POPE and at the Navy Radio Station in Olongapo, Philippines, callsign NPO, communicating with stations around the Pacific and in the United States.
