Class #19

Class #19 convened in January 1937 and completed in July 1937. Chief Sandy McGregor was the instructor.

Radioman Second Class Clarence Alvin “Al” Detterich

Al Detterich graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station BAKER in Guam. He was transferred to Dutch Harbor, Alaska to establish the HFDF site there. In 1945, he deployed to Guam to help set up the new Station A in Dededo, Guam. He was commissioned and later retired as a Lieutenant Commander.

Al Detterich’s obituary was published in the NCVA’s Cryptolog magazine, Volume 17, Summer 1996, page 22:

Clarence "Al" Detterich, Lieutenant Commander U.S. Navy (Retired) "On-the-Roof' Class # 19, passed away on 4 June 1996. Al was born in Bronson, Kansas on 11 January 1912. He enlisted in the Navy in 1933, and after having served for four years as a radioman in the U.S. Fleet, he was selected for training with the “On-the- Roof” Gang in early 1937. From 1937, until his retirement in 1958, Al served assignments in Guam (twice), Washington, DC, Dutch Harbor, Wahiawa, Cheltenham, Maryland; Skaggs Island, California and Kamiseya, Japan. Al was known for his talents in the area of electronic maintenance, installation and research as related to radio intercept activities. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he was employed by Autonetics Corp., in their engineering department, for 15 years.

Al married Eugenia Ojeda, in Yuma, Arizona in 1939. In addition to his wife, Al leaves three sons, Bruce, Mark and Paul; a daughter, Maria Strevens and several grandchildren.

Radioman Second Class Robert Leo “Buck” Dormer

Buck Dormer graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station BAKER in Guam. He was transferred to Dutch Harbor, Alaska to establish the HFDF site there. In Spring 1942, he was part of a team that established Station F in Happy Valley (Chungking), China. He served through the end of the war, earning a commission. He eventually retired as a Commander.

Commander Robert "Buck" Dormer, NCVA, OTRG Class #19 died on 11 October 2003 from a stroke. Commander Dormer served in China as part of the intercept team under SACO in 1940-42, nominally under Rear Admiral “Mary” Miles, but more directly under the supervision of Colonel Holcomb, later Brigadier General USMC. In 1942 the team's intercept station was located about 15 miles from Chungking. The complete story of the Naval Security Group in China, 1928-1915 may be found in CRYPTOLOG V7#2, Winter, 1986.

His wife, Rita, survives him.

Radioman Second Class Harvey John Howard

Harvey Howard graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station CAST in the Philippines. In 1940, he transferred to Station HYPO in Hawaii and then to Washington, DC. He served in World War II and Korea before retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.

Radioman Second Class Edward N. “Ed” Kelly

Ed Kelly graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station BAKER I Guam. For unknown reasons, he was removed from the OP-20-G rolls in 1938 and was recalled after the beginning of World War II. He was assigned to the intercept site in Moorabbin, Australia.

Radioman Second Class Raymond Elmer “Ray” Parrott

Ray Parrott graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station CAST in the Philippines. He transferred to Station ABLE in Shanghai, China. His enlistment expired in 1939, and he left the Navy and enlisted in the Army. During the war, he was commissioned in the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Radioman Second Class Alva Elwin Squires

Alva Squires graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station CAST in the Philippines. He transferred to Station ABLE in Shanghai, China. In 1940, he transferred to Station HYPO in Hawaii. After the war began, he transferred to Bainbridge Island as a Chief Petty Officer to instruct katakana intercept classes. In 1943, he was in Adak in 1943.

Radioman Second Class Theodore John “Ted” Wildman

Ted Wildman graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station L at Lualualei, Hawaii, where he was in charge of the Direction Finding site. He then transferred to Samoa via Guam in order to establish the new direction finding site at Vaitogi, Samoa. He transferred to Washington, DC to become an instructor at the Radio Materiel School in Bellevue, where he was for the outset of the war. Shortly thereafter, he volunteered for special assignment in China, where he spent most of the war years.

Wildman was one of a small number of On-the-Roof Gang members who wrote a book about his experiences in the Navy. His book, The Expendables, is about his experiences in China during World War II. The Richard Widmark movie, Destination Gobi, was based on Wildman’s book.

 

Ted Wildman’s obituary was published in the NCVA’s Cryptolog magazine, Volume 08, Fall 1986, page 23:

LCDR THEODORE (TED) J. WILDMAN

Ted Wildman, N4FUJ. OTRG, NCVA, a Naval Security Group pioneer, died 15 September 1986 after an illness of several  years in Florida. Wildman was a frequent contributor to CRYPTOLOG and was the author of THE EXPENDABLES. Before his death, Wildman told CRYPTOLOG Editor Lewis. “I have done everything there is to do in the world at least three times, do not regret my passing when this illness takes me. I feel sorry for the young people with this disease, who will die before they can experience life as I did.” Wildman had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Ted was a native of Lowell, Massachusetts. He enlisted. in the Navy in 1933. He was commissioned during WWII and served much of that period as an electronics and radio intelligence officer in China and Mongolia.

After the war he worked in Navy electronics intelligence in Washington, London and Istanbul. He retired in 1956 and worked in real estate in Colorado before returning to Washington in 1965 and joining the NSA [National Security Agency]. He worked at Fort Meade, Maryland, Japan and Vietnam before retiring a second time and moving to Florida i n 1980.  Survivors include his wife Lula I., of Clearwater, a daughter, Martha L. Koval of St. Petersburg, Florida and a sister Gladys R. Rodrigues of Kissimmee, Florida.

Radioman Second Class William Crockett Young

William Young graduated from On-the-Roof Gang Class #19 in July 1937 and was assigned to Station HYPO in Hawaii. He transferred to Station CAST in the Philippines in 1938 and then to Station S in Bainbridge Island in 1940. He received advanced to warrant officer during the war and retired as a CWO4.
